Months of intense football rivalry will reach a climax when Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United FC and the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) take to the field tomorrow night to determine the champions in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super 4 knock-out tournament scheduled for the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground.
Alpha will start as strong favourites by dint of their superior performances at every level of the game. The GDF squad has also enjoyed reasonable successes at high profile tournaments and would be coming with a vengeance to capture this inaugural GFF tournament.
‘The hammers’ have not been at the top of their game of recent and had meekly surrendered to Fruta Conquerors in the semi finals of this year’s Mayor’s Cup championships. Further, several key players have demonstrated great skills in centre field but have blundered at the opposition’s goal mouth forcing the coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover to readjust his mode of application.
That the blunders continued into their first encounter against Puerto Rico club team, River Plate in their first of two games, certainly would not raise the hopes of their supporters of a victory.
However, ‘The Hammers’ would want to feel that they have made some reparation in the second game where they came away with a 3-2 victory.
The likes of Goalkeeper Ronson Williams, Captain Howard Lowe, Dwain Jacobs, Dwight Peters, Abrams, Philbert Moffatt, Kelvin Mc Kenzie and company will be seeking to make amends by lifting the title.
The GDF will look to the quartet that secured their final place, Delroy Deane, Telson McKinnon, Desford Williams and Travis Hilliman to lead their ambitions of taking the crown.
Only one team could win. Which will it be? Football buffs will just have to be at the venue to witness the action as it unfolds.
The action gets underway with the precursor to the finals, a fitting palate pleaser, where Rosignol United representing the pride of Berbice, throws down the gauntlet the pride of Linden, Milerock, when they collide in the third place playoff. It’s a ‘don’t you dare miss it’ affair and the action gets underway at 18:30hrs.
