Five days of football activity, dubbed Grassroot Football Festival came to an end when administrators of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), in collaboration with FIFA Instructors, Anton Corneal and Rodrigo Kenton, brought the curtains down on the programme at the Police Club Eve Leary yesterday morning with practical sessions.
The programme entailed the training of some 31 teachers drawn from schools in Bartica, East and West Berbice, Linden and Georgetown in the intricacies of the sport.
These teachers would then be certified and returned to their respective institutions to impart what they had learnt.
Mr. Corneal, one of the two FIFA instructors in charge of the programme, said that the sessions had been interesting and informative. He said that the participants were very receptive to the material and were exposed to skills in the organization of games and other football related activity with an aim of instilling values.
The teachers will return to their respective schools to impart what they had learnt to their charges.
The FIFA official further revealed that participants were urged to incorporate other stakeholders within the programme such as health and education personnel. “Football is a microcosm of life and the aim of this exercise is to instill valuable skills into participants that will serve to improve their lives,” posited Mr. Corneal.
He said that the ploy to utilize teachers was meant to broaden the affiliation base thus the schools presented the perfect platform for the introduction of the identified variables.
Over the five days of activities participants were tutored on technical drills and were engaged in small sided games meant to hone their skills.
Meanwhile, technical development officer of the GFF, Lyndon France lauded the programme and feels that it will serve to bolster developmental works of the GFF. He assisted in the organizational aspect of the programme.
The closing ceremony took place at the Ocean View International Hotel Convention Centre, Liliendaal, yesterday afternoon.
