Dear Editor,
It is indeed interesting to witness the Guyana Cricket Board’s Chairman of Selectors lambasting the WICB for their policy of opting to blood young cricketers.
However, what was most interesting was the fact that he never once went after his friend and close confidante, Clyde Butts, who is the Chairman of the WI selectors. He should be the last person to comment on such a policy or practice as he is guilty of practicing double standards and most hypocritical.
Raphael was the Chairman of the Guyana senior selectors and was also a WICB Director at the time a few years ago when he adopted the said policy with the Guyana team by axing all of the senior players in one fell swoop, Neil McGarrell, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Reon King, Vishal Nagamootoo and a few others.
How can you criticise someone else for doing the exact same thing that you did without first acknowledging that you made a similar mistake?
Raphael is still the Chairman of the Guyana senior selection panel to this date and we have finished at the bottom of the table for three consecutive years at the four-day regional tournaments. Can he say whether that policy is bearing fruit at the national level? He was a Director at the WICB up to 2009 and it would be interesting for him to record his contribution at that forum in this regard.
I am positive that no one at the GCB Executive level can change a squad that is selected by the selection panel and, for that matter; the same should be the case at the WI level headed by Butts or any other selection panel.
I am of the firm view that if the Board is not happy with the performance of their selection panel or they are not following the policies and guidelines of the Board, then the prudent thing to do is to relieve the selectors of their job and install a panel that will follow the Board’s policy and guidelines.
I think that selectors are recommended by the territorial Boards and are voted upon by the WICB. If the majority of Guyanese are not happy with the non- selection of Chanderpaul and Sarwan, they should lobby the GCB to have Butts and company replaced immediately.
We are all aware of the insularity that exists within our region. We need to get selectors that are professional in their outlook and their jobs and should be fully accountable to their stakeholders. I have heard no one making a case of protest for Sarwan and Chanderpaul after not being selected by the IPL a few years now. It is obvious that they are not 20/20 material as they are not attractive to any of the IPL franchises. The selectors would do well to follow this lead.
I must commend the Minister of Sport, Frank Anthony, for his interest in this issue with the WI selectors as the selectors should be more open and accountable to the cricket loving public, who are the major stakeholders.
The WICB should pay attention to the policies adopted and irreparable damage done by Raphael a few years ago and adopt a good mixture of youth and experience.
