Prepared to readily admit that he is someone that does not back down from a challenge, GT&T CEO Yog Mahadeo could not wait to respond to Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony’s dare for the organisers of the 10/10 Softball Competition to achieve a target of 2,000 teams for the next edition of the tournament.
“I want to admit here that we will accept the challenge that was given to us to target 2,000 teams for our tournament next year and I also want to say here tonight that we will double the prize monies on offer and that is not all, what about two cars for the next tournament’s Most Valuable Players (MVPs),” Mahadeo asked the gathering at the presentation ceremony on Wednesday evening, at the Regency Suites Hotel.
The dynamic CEO, who was seen in full interactive mode with participants of the competition, organisers and the media, disclosed that the Company has embarked on a list of activities that will be difficult to match.
Also in attendance at the occasion were sponsors representatives of Kings Jewellery World, Banks DIH Ltd among others that paid rapt attention to the remarks of Dr. Anthony, who said that a great lesson was learnt during the competition through the staging of the preliminary rounds in communities where the residents were genuinely interested in participating.
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony said that the record participation of women teams managed to break the taboo of women in sport, especially those from the rural villages.
“We succeeded in breaking the negative stigma attached to women’s involvement in sports and for this I would like to commend GT&T, the organising committee and the Guyana Softball League for work well done,” Dr. Anthony stated.
He also spoke of the economic opportunities that could be derived from the organisation of such an event, adding that it is a model that works could make money and could be used as a grassroots model to foster racial integration.
He closed by saying that 10/10 cricket has a bright future and is here to stay.
