– motorcycle collides with minibus
A 34-year-old mother of two was killed on the spot early yesterday morning after her motorcycle collided with a minibus on Mandela Avenue, in the vicinity of the National Cultural Centre. Dead is Shondel Samaroo, of 32 Public Road, La Grange, West Bank Demerara. According to a police press release, the driver of the minibus (BLL 9965) and Samaroo, were proceeding in the same direction on Mandela Avenue when she lost control of her motorcycle.
The police reported that the woman ended up in the path of the minibus. The incident occurred at around 04:00hrs.
Eyewitnesses to the accident assisted in getting the woman to the hospital, where she was officially pronounced dead.
The driver of the minibus has been taken into custody and is assisting the police with their investigation.
An employee of the Bank of Guyana, Shondel Samaroo was also the Secretary of the Guyana Netball Association; Junior National Coach; recently managed the National under-16 Netball team and was coach of the popular “Eagles Netball Group”.
When this newspaper visited the woman’s home yesterday morning relatives had just received the news of her demise.
Her brother, Jermaine Samaroo, told this publication that his sister was probably returning home when the accident occurred.
According to him, he was told by the police that his sister lost control of her motorcycle and was struck down by the bus. He said he could not speculate more about the accident since he had not received all the facts.
He described his sister as a hard working person, who loved her two children dearly. He further told this publication that his sister was recently promoted at her job. The young woman was the only daughter for her family.
Other relatives said that the young woman was an ardent lover of Netball, which she was widely recognised for. According to relatives, Samaroo received numerous medals in her pursuits. Along with her two children, Samaroo leaves to mourn her father and four brothers.
