Residents of Diamond ‘Backstreet’, East Bank Demerara, want the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) to act fast following what appeared to be a breach of the sea dam there which contribute to severe flooding in the wee hours of the mornings since Friday last.
Residents said that the flash floods have become a recent issue, and it was because of the squatters that are occupying the sea dam.
According to some residents, since last week each morning they have been faced with high tides that breach the sea dam and flood the area, damaging people’s property contained in the lower flat of their building.
Persons in the area said that the squatters on the sea dam contribute to the damaged sea dam, while one woman said that when she woke up in the wee hours of Monday morning to go to the hospital she placed her feet into three feet of water, which later receded.
The Ministry of Public Works and Communication has issued notices informing these squatters that they are occupying state reserves against the law.
The Sea Defence Act prohibits persons from occupying sea defence reserves and threatens stiff penalties.
