Barbadian based Guyanese boxer Cleveland Fraser sparred several impressive rounds yesterday morning at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) and should he take this form to the ring on fight night, his opponent, Kurt Bess may be required to pull off all stops if he is to leave the ring victorious. The two are scheduled to meet on April 25 next at the MacKenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden.
Fraser’s sparring partner was Mitchell Rogers, who had suffered a defeat at the hands of Bess late last year and should have a clear idea of Bess style. As such, he has imparted some valuable tips to Fraser who appears to be soaking up the lessons like a sponge.
Rogers, by far the heavier of the two, packs a punch and Fraser was subjected to vicious wallops for every mistake committed. Anxious to minimize the volume of punishment, Fraser quickly corrected himself and one gets the impression that Bess will have a tough fight on his hands. In all, the Barbados based Guyanese turned in 6 energetic rounds of sparring with Rogers shortly before engaging in four more rounds on the striking pads. He finished up with two more rounds on the heavy bag and a hectic session with the skipping rope. Fraser then closed off sessions with some 30 minutes of calisthenics.
“This guy is strong and a technical fighter,” remarked Joseph Murray who along with Sebert Blake is putting the finishing touches to Fraser’s regimen. “We are simply putting in the finishing touches since Fraser would have done the bulk of the work in Barbados,” explained Murray.
Fraser’s manager, Raphael Jonas, is also exuding confidence, “We are leaving nothing to chance and are sharpening up in all of the crucial areas,” he said.
Over at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing gym, Bess was also applying himself to his work under the guidance of George ‘Canchi’ Ophrect. The lanky Bess sparred twelve hard rounds between Anthony Augustin and Kwesi Jones and looks ready to war. He also did 4 rounds on the striking pads and closed off with a brisk session of free hand exercises. Bess, a reticent boxer, remained non committal when questioned on his ploys for the bout. Oprecht did his talking for him. “Fraser will sleep!” he emphatically stated. He further said that Bess is focused and ready to claim his first title.
Patrick Boston also heightened his preparations for his super/middleweight bout against Edmond DeClou. Winston Pompey, DeClou’s original opponent, was forced out of the bout after suffering an injury during training sessions. In the remaining bouts Pauline London and Sharon Ward battles for the third time in a bout dubbed ‘The decider’ while Cassius Matthews returns after suffering a lost to Simeon Hardy, to oppose Shawn Pyle over 4 rounds.
There will also be the regular accompaniment of 4 amateur bouts and the organisers are awaiting the list from the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) executives.
This card will be co-promoted by Dexter Osborne, a Lindener with a desire to have the sport resuscitated in the Bauxite Mining Town. Mr. Osborne said that residents of his region are hungry for fistic entertainment and he expects the ProAm initiative to be a starting point towards this objective.
