Missed opportunities and glaring blunders were the order of the day and resulted in a nil all stalemate when Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and Puerto Rico’s club team, River Plate clashed in their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) second round qualifier at the National Stadium Providence last evening.
A small but vocal crowd watched as the two teams played to a goalless first half, more from tardy play on both sides than anything else. The home side started the game at a fast pace and merely one minute into the game wended their way into the oppositions goal area compliments of skillful ball weaving from Devon Millington. Having completed the bulk of the work, the dapper striker mistimed the kick and the ball slid harmlessly down the right side of the goal.
Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant was the next player to foul up a perfectly good play, shortly after skillfully evading the opposition’s defense line up. He failed to complete the spectacular play and his shot slid alongside the right of the goal.
Shortly afterwards, Abassi McPherson was sent packing by the referee who ruled that his tackle was excessively forceful and warranted the sternest of reprimand. What should have been about three clear goals in Guyana’s favour at the end of the first half ended up as nil all.
Shawn Bishop was the first to err in the second half when he allowed a perfectly good pass, square in front of the goal to go a-begging. Dwight Peters, apparently felt the urge to emulate his teammate and his shot two minutes later also slid to the side of the opposition’s goal.
By now the small crowd was agitated and egged the local team on. In response, Dwight Peters, all alone with just the goalie to contend with, kicked the ball over the crossbar eliciting a deep groan from his team mates and an even deeper one from his fans.
The dapper Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams then weaved his way pasty several players and when it finally appeared as though Alpha would have broken through, he flunked the shot seconds before the final whistle sounded. It epitomized the kind of night the players and the crowd had to endure.
The teams face off once again tomorrow afternoon starting at 15:00hrs at the GCC ground Bourda. The teams and more particularly, the fans would hope for an improved showing.
