Melville defeated Belle Plaine by 27 runs to win the final of the NT Computec 15 overs softball Inter-Mandir cricket competition on Sunday at Sewram’s tarmac in Belle Plaine, Wakenaam.
Played in front of a fair sized crowd, Melville batted first and managed 133-9 off their allotted overs. Varounie Sasepaul led with 33 and Jaggernauth Manbodh supported with 24. The pair featured in a fourth wicket stand of 52 after their team found themselves in early trouble at 20-3 in four overs. Somnauth Prashad captured 3-27 while Gopaul Dindyal picked up 3-20.
Belle Plaine in reply scored 106 all out in 14.4 overs with Satnarine Sahadeo getting 35 and Prashad 20. Prem Persaud bagged 4-15 while Manbodh returned to take 3-29 in a fine allround display.
Melville received the winning trophy, while Belle Plaine collected the runner-up prize. The other Mandirs that took part in the competition namely, Zeelandia, Maria’s Pleasure and Trivini were presented with a trophy each, while Manbodh and Amit Jairam (Belle Plaine) took the best bowler and batsman prizes respectively in the competition.
