Veteran Rudy Grant like several other players who were making their return to competitive tennis after a hiatus showed no sign of rust or lethargy in defeating Javier Uribe 6-1, 6-1 in the Men’s 45 Singles as play in the MACORP Open Championships continued over the weekend, at the Pegasus Hardcourts.
Another player making a comeback was Imo Fox and he too showed fine mettle in repelling a stiff challenge from top junior player Gavin Lewis, who he beat 7-6, 6-4 to advance.
Nicholas Fenty, a former emerging junior player was not as fortunate on his return as he lost both of his engagements, first teaming up with Andre Erskine in the Men’s Doubles and losing to the pair of Sandeep Chand / Andre Lopes, before returning later to be eliminated by the promising 14 year-old Daniel Lopes.
Fenty / Erskine lost to Chand / Lopes 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a match lasting close to two hours, while he fell to Daniel Lopes in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
Fox’s match against Lewis had a vociferous crowd who supported the younger Lewis, but even a valiant effort combined with partisan support could not take him over the line.
The experienced Fox mixed some blistering forehand with deft volleying to squeeze past Lewis and advance.
There was another keen battle in the Girl’s 18 as Aruna Ramrattan avenged a previous defeat to Nicola Ramdyhan in three sets. After losing the first set 6-3, Ramrattan stormed back to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to complete a good win. She next faces Shawna Gentle in what is expected to be a close final.
Ezra Sue-Ho, who is expected to challenge for the Men’s title had an easy weekend, winning both of his matches in the Men’s Singles and in the Mixed Doubles Open.
Meanwhile, top seed Jeremy Miller was expected to start his campaign yesterday when he faced Sandeep Chand.
In Men’s 45 Doubles action, Maxie Fox/Sakae Yamada defeated Albert Madramootoo/Steve David-Longe 7-6, 6-3 in a marathon match.
In another Men’s Doubles match, Leyland Leacock / Gilbert Barckoy played excellent tennis to turn back the challenge of the Glasgow brothers Nicolas and Jason in a close match, before prevailing 6-3 7-5.
Play resumes daily at the Pegasus Courts from 17:00 hrs
