Set for international acclaim
Reigning PABA and WBC CABOFE Super Bantamweight titleholder Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore has combed the globe searching for that elusive fight that can turn him from a hardworking fighter into an international champion, or preferably, a world champion.
His efforts were somewhat stymied when he fought Columbian Irene Pacheco in his hometown and suffered a controversial loss. Since then, the Guyanese fighter has notched up several victories at home and abroad that netted him prestigious titles including a unanimous 12-round decision over Indonesia Boxing Association champion, Marangin Marbun, for the vacant PABA crown, in that fighter’s hometown.
His last fight on November 16, against Venezuelan Breilor Teran at the Princess Hotel, Providence EBD, ended controversially in Moore’s favour and caused a hubbub among patrons that saw the bout.
Undaunted, Moore traveled to the USA where he signed a promotional contract with Boxing 360, a notable Promotions group in that country. Immediately called to fistic duty, Moore outclassed veteran Felipe Almanza (18-23-4, 9 KOs) over six rounds at the Aviator Sports Complex, Brooklyn, NY and from all indications, is set to carry on the winning tradition in the USA.
“We were excited to introduce Leon Moore to U.S. boxing fans,” Boxing 360 CEO and Founder Mario Yagobi commented soon after Moore scored his first victory. “He’s a world-rated super bantamweight contender and our goal is to better position him for a world title fight this year against WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka or any of the other world champions,” he continued.
Kaieteur Sport spoke with Moore yesterday morning from his Brooklyn base and he confirmed that he has recently signed a promotional contract with the American Boxing Promotions Group. Moore intimated that he arrived in the USA since January 21 and started training at the Jackie Gleasons Boxing Gym soon afterwards. He said that he is under the tutelage of former local boxers, Dillon Carew and Rodney Tappin.
Moore further stated that he has been advised by his promoters to start preparations for another bout soon. He has not yet been furnished with details pertaining to the bout but remains optimistic that he would soon receive a televised fight. “Such a bout could propel me firmly onto the International scene since I would get the opportunity to showcase my skill to a larger audience,” explained Moore.
Commenting on his first outing in the USA Moore revealed that he was undaunted by his challenger even though he was a veteran of more than 40 fights. The Guyanese pugilist said that he is training ardently for his next engagement. He said that he trains for two hours at the Seaview Park, Brooklyn every morning and returns to the gym at around 15:00hrs for a four hours stint.
Moore won the WBC CABOFE and NABA bantamweight belts in September 2009 after clinching a unanimous 12-round verdict over former 2-time world champion Maurico Pastrana. Last January, he won a unanimous 12-round decision over Indonesia Boxing Association champion, Marangin Marbun for the vacant PABA crown before the controversial win against Teran. Other members of Boxing 360’s stable include USBA heavyweight champion Maurice “Sugar Moe” Harris, former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio, NY State Super Middleweight title-holder Guyanese Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen, KO King Tyrone Brunson, Nick “Hands of Gold” Casal, Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano, Mike Mollo, Joshua “The Juice” Harris, Emad Ali, Angel “Toro” Hernandez and “King” David.
