Dear Editor,
You’ve heard this said many times before: A true friend is hard to find. I’m proud to call Glenn Lall my friend and a patriotic Guyanese.
In a report carried in the Guyana Chronicle on April 14, “President launches scathing attack on Kaieteur News publisher”, President Jagdeo is quoted as saying, “Now take for example the Kaieteur News. Every single day they invent a story and we respond to it and they never carry a response. They go on to invent a new one and everyday we have to respond and respond and they never carry the responses.
“It is because they are hoping to sidetrack us from focusing on development and going along their agenda. They want to set the agenda for us.”
He continued, “And if you know the person who owns the Kaieteur News, well, he is small minded, barely functional…and his ego is beyond his capabilities. But more importantly and more dangerously, he does not recognise that himself.”
“President Jagdeo also accused Lall of benefiting from ‘backtracking’, alleging that the KN publisher was “involved in backtracking” during which he “ripped off” lots of people, but is now trying to hide from that.”
The President of Guyana is reputed for his slanderous, vulgar and undiplomatic attacks on people’s character when they do not conform to his policies and behaviour as Head of State. In that capacity, he is protected by the constitution, and cannot be sued for slander. But I urge Jagdeo to hand over any evidence he may have to the Commissioner of Police to support his allegation of Lall’s involvement in illegal backtracking activities, and also to produce the names of the persons that he “ripped off”.
The President must not be allowed to destroy one’s character without evidence to support his lies. Unlike what Jagdeo is doing to the Guyanese people on a daily basis, Glenn Lall has no reason or intention to rip off anyone. Countless Guyanese and underprivileged children in India are benefiting from the generosity and success of Glenn Lall, and he never talks about it.
Kaieteur News is staffed by hard-working professionals and does not “invent” the stories they publish. And as evident by the recent Freddie Kissoon blunder, they factcheck everything and has the courage to correct any misrepresentation, thereby protecting the integrity of the publication we’re all proud of.
But Jagdeo has no one but himself to blame for the growing popularity on this medium, for he continues to fuel distrust of his administration by lack of transparency and accountability, and he’s stubborn enough to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.
The majority of Guyanese at home and abroad, thankfully does not share Jagdeo’s opinion, and demonstrate this by their overwhelming support for Kaieteur News. Bharrat Jagdeo has his own agenda in trying to besmirch the character of this man, but Glenn Lall is more man than Bharrat Jagdeo can ever hope to be, if you know what I mean.
Glenn Lall may have come from a humble beginning, but hard work, personal sacrifice and ambition has been the hallmark of this man’s success. And despite severe pressure from the Jagdeo Administration to shut him up, Glenn Lall and his Kaieteur News continue to expose the corruption and waste of public funds perpetrated by Jagdeo’s authoritarian style of governance.
My friend Glenn Lall is beyond corruption; he cannot be bribed, and will not condone wrongdoing by any administration. His mission is just, and he will continue to be the beacon of truth for all Guyanese.
