Former Continental of Americas boxing champion, Michael Benjamin urged the students of St George’s High School to support their team as that school prepares for duty in the Scotia Bank/Pepsi School Football Academy tournament currently underway at the Old Guyana National Service Sports Club, Carifesta Avenue.
Mr. Benjamin was delivering brief remarks to the students at their assembly where the teachers also exhibited gears donated by the sponsors and earlier handed over to the school administration.
Mr. Benjamin reminded the students of the importance of sports on the school’s curriculum as a part of their development, even as he reminisced on his inauguration into the fistic sport during his tenure at the North Ruimveldt Multilateral School.
The former boxing champion noted the importance of the sponsor’s input and urged the students to render full support of the team. “This is an excellent opportunity for you to distinguish your school as a force, unlike the preconceived myth that nothing good comes from your institution,” said Mr. Benjamin.
Meanwhile, national football coach, Gordon Braithwaite is scheduled to visit the school sometime today where he is expected to impart valuable tips to the young footballers. While there the former footballer will release the fixtures for the above mentioned championships.
Headmaster of the school, Mr. Krishenand Ghanshiam was also present at the function and joined Ms Adams in thanking Mr. Benjamin for his presentation.
They both urged the students to take note of the advice given. The footballers are scheduled to get in action soon. Among some of the gears received are hoses, vests, trunks, bibs and balls.
