Dear Editor,
Over the past 19 years, Guyanese in and out of Guyana witness the total destruction of the fabric of Guyanese society. Most recently while visiting a Caribbean island a citizen of that island advised me that they cannot live in Guyana because it is a society void of moral norms and culture.
This is an observation that most decent Guyanese will acknowledge. Some of us have tried to analyse what went wrong, while other buried their head in the proverbial sand shouting “Democracy was restored”.
The tone and esprit de corps of a nation is set by its government. The morale of a country’s peoples determines it viability and cohesion i.e. unit of will and purpose. Leadership plays an important role in defining the character, viability and cohesion of every nation state.
The demise of Guyana is with its leadership. One can conclude that the current regime is not a government because it has failed to nurture the state into a cohesive unit, provide good governance, rule based on the law, adhere to the constitution, recognise the sanctity of life, human right and the dignity of humanity. These are things government do for its people. It is considered to be the social contract with its peoples. Governments are always in service to it peoples.
On the other hand, corporation has interest and profit motives but there is always a social responsibility to the communities they serve i.e. being a good corporate citizen is very important.
When one examines the deals and the exploitation of the treasures of Guyana by its current regime one may come to the conclusion it is a corporation. The latest Indian forestry deal comes to mind. This resource exploitation and seizure from the treasury of Guyana is one of the most egregious corrupt acts. As such one cannot conclude that the regime is a corporation. because its actions does not reveal a social obligation to the Guyanese communities it serves.
However, when one review the news from Guyana, the corruption, extra-judicial killings, the marginalisation of a section of the society as retribution for perceived previous governments sins and the prevailing climate of fear within the society; these actions are typical of a “War Lord” ruled country; engaged in the enterprise of Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisation (RICO).
In countries which embrace the values of the dignity of humanity and good governance the attorney generals will be forced to engage in a legal investigation of such criminal enterprise. Guyanese need to determine if the current regime is a government, a corporation or a criminal enterprise. The evidence of the pass 19 years is there to be reviewed and examined. All of us Guyanese and the international community of nation states are waiting to understand what went wrong in Guyana. This is a failure of leadership. The Guyanese people deserves better.
