After weeks of pulsating action the champions of the Mayor’s Cup football competition will be known when Conquerors FC squares off with Camptown FC at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground on Thursday April 21.
The winners cart off a first prize of one million dollars donated by President Bharrat Jagdeo, while the runners up receive half that amount put up by Body Max Gym. Already, the teams have intensified their preparations and it’s anybody’s guess who will win the prestigious prize. Conquerors FC, led by a Jomo Hinds double in the 57th and 88th minutes, defeated the Guyana Defence Force 2-1 after Delroy Deen pulled one back for the losers in the 56th minute. That victory propelled Conquerors to the semifinals before they defeated Pele to cement a finals berth.
Camptown’s Peter Parks had stitched in the lone goal, in the 32nd minute to defeat Western Tigers before clinching an upset victory over Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United to secure the last place in the final. Both teams are in excellent form and a ding dong battle is envisaged.
There will also be an exhibition match between the Guyana Defence Force and New Amsterdam United to start things off next Thursday.
Meanwhile, organizer Lennox Arthur collected the cheque for the second prize from the proprietors of Body Max Gym of United Nation’s Place and Croal Street, yesterday afternoon. Assistant Manager, Tessa Devonshire handed over the package to Arthur in the presence of Wendell Humphrey and trainer Roger Calendar. The simple ceremony took place at the Body Max Gym.
Mr. Arthur thanked his benefactors profusely for donating the prize. Ms Devonshire reiterated her organization’s commitment to the development of local sport even as she wished the organizers well.
Pele and Alpha will battle in the third place playoff where the winner receives two hundred thousand dollars. The fourth place finisher receive and one hundred thousand dollars.
