Relatives of 75-year-old Shairoon Ali are angry at a news report which stated that she committed suicide because of a debt she owed for groceries.
The relatives claimed that there is no way that the woman would have been indebted since she, as well as her immediate family, is well off. They insisted that she took her own life out of frustration over an ear ailment that had gotten progressively worse.
Ali was found hanging in the upper flat of her D’Edward Village, West Coast Demerara home on Sunday.
Yesterday’s edition of this newspaper had stated that Ali had encountered financial difficulties. According to the article, a relative said that the small pension that she was collecting was just not enough to offset the cost of living. The article had also claimed that the woman had owed the shop some money and was finding it difficult to pay.
However the woman’s relatives said that the suggestion contained in the report was entirely false and has caused them great embarrassment.
Kaieteur News was told that the woman normally spent most of her time at the Rose Hall residence of a relative who happens to be “well off” and she was not in need of anything. However from time to time she would go to D’Edward where her son and his family reside in the bottom flat of her house.
According to her granddaughter, Asma Ali, the
elderly woman was suffering from a hearing problem for which she had sought treatment overseas. But while she was previously experiencing periodic pain, recently the pain became persistent.
Ali is convinced that it was her grandmother’s medical condition that caused her to take such a drastic step and not financial problems.
“She has her own bank account. It’s in me and her name. Whenever she comes here for a day or two, whatever she wants to eat she would buy, she does not credit anything. This last time she came here we did all the cooking for her, so there was no need for her to go to any shop.” Asma Ali told Kaieteur News yesterday.
She said that on Sunday, the elderly woman was sitting with them in the lower flat of the two-storey house before going upstairs. She was supposed to return downstairs but when she did not after a certain time, Asma sent her son to check on her.
It was he who found her motionless body hanging with a rope around her neck and went back downstairs and informed the others.
“Up to Friday she bought the latest tablet for the hearing impaired. She is not hand-to-mouth. Most of her family is overseas and they will not see her punish. Her son is a big contractor. This is totally embarrassing,” Asma Ali said.
