More than one year ago monies which were to be paid out to police pensioners were stolen from the Force’s Finance Office and to date the senior citizens are yet to receive their money.
Earlier this year the Commissioner of Police had told this publication that the monies were available for payment. However when pensioners turned up at the Police Finance Office they were told that this was not the case.
When contacted yesterday Commissioner Greene said that in January when he said the monies were available it was an honest mistake. He said the information which was passed to him by the Finance Officer was that the paperwork was sent to the Ministry of Finance and they are awaiting a response.
This, however, is not going down well with pensioners who have been running back and forth to police finance office to uplift their monies.
It was reported in a press statement in early January of 2010 that the money had been in a canister, secured in a locked cashier cage.
The release had said “investigations are being conducted into the larceny of $3.4 million from the Police Finance Office, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary…there were no signs of any breakage to the Office”.
To date, only departmental charges have been instituted against some ranks but no criminal charges.
