A delegation comprising residents of West Coast Demerara recently met with the Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), Yog Mahadeo, at the entity’s Brickdam head office.
The meeting was to discuss the status of the new “e-magine” service and to bring the price down for DSL service.
The delegation was told of the many difficult circumstances and challenges the company faces at the moment.
Mahadeo said that “e-magine” was supposed to have gone a far way, even to the point of covering West Coast Demerara. He added that Government’s permission to accelerate progress is a major hindrance to the company’s ability to deliver. The residents of West Coast Demerara were to have enjoyed “e-magine” service by the end of March. Unfortunately this may be pushed back to some time in 2012.
Head of the West Demerara delegation, Colin Woolford, used the opportunity to query the status of Berbice and Linden. He was told that the position with Berbice is similar to that of West Coast Demerara.
There seems to be a difficulty with Linden because the government’s fibre optic cable will be coming to that community first.
Mahadeo explained that GT&T is constrained by the feasibility of certain areas, however he assured that the company is not giving up and will continue to work assiduously for Guyanese.
Woolford used the forum to plead with the company to reduce the current charges of $9,980 for 256kbps. However, while there was no commitment, Mahadeo was optimistic that his Board of Directors may do so very soon.
