Last Saturday I had a special treat. I visited 63 Beach for the day to meet and talk to a new friend. Ebony Narpatty and her parents run a resort on the beach named Sunsplash Holiday Beach Resort that has been passed down from generation to generation in her family. The story of this family business is as interesting as the view from 63 Beach that looks over to Suriname.
I decided to go on this outing because last weekend was my mother-in-law’s birthday. Five of us piled into a car and drove to Berbice. We got there in time for lunch, which Ebony’s mother had prepared and ready for us. I spoke with Ebony earlier in the week to order the lunch and was starving when we arrived.
We had some scrumptious chicken curry, stewed fish, roti, rice and some veggies. To drink, we had chilled coconut water that came from the coconut trees on the resort property. Lunch was great, but dessert was mind-blowing. We were taken up to the second floor veranda where an entire table was brimming with several types of fresh fruits.
The scene was a mini vacation. Palm trees swaying in the wind, the beach just steps away and a table overflowing with sweet pineapple, mango, pomegranate, guava, two different types of bananas (one of which I had never eaten before) and a type of pear I had never seen before. I was in heaven.
The resort itself is adorable. The property is a tropical oasis with coconut trees, fruit trees and beautiful foliage everywhere. Since Ebony’s father has a love for music, there is a music theme throughout the dining area downstairs. The upstairs veranda has chairs and tables all around to sit and enjoy the beach view and the ocean breeze. The facilities are clean and easy to access.
After dessert, Ebony and I went for a long walk on the beach. We chatted as she gave me a tour of the area. Her dogs came on the walk, too, and kept us very safe from one poor guy who just wanted to ride his bike past us. Good puppies.
It seems Ebony has been pondering her future as it concerns the family business, since she is starting her final year at UG – Berbice. We talked about the exciting potential the resort has and about her other choices for the future. I pointed out that there are so many people who would love to have the opportunity to run a family resort on a beach.
Ebony’s mom and dad were a pleasure as well and my family chatted with them while Ebony and I went for our walk on the beach. That is one of the great things about Guyanese culture, most people are willing to sit down and chat a bit and you just never know when you will make a new friend.
So why am I telling you about my trip to 63 Beach? Because this resort is a perfect example of the under-estimated and under-utilised gems that can be found in Guyana. It bothers me when Guyanese feel the need to apologise for their beautiful country. Yet when even the president of the country puts down icons like the Pegasus instead of appreciating the nostalgia of it, I can see why so many may feel their attempts at creating something unique to Guyana is not appreciated.
As someone who is pretty well travelled, it is my opinion that this resort is absolutely adorable – just as it is – and Ebony and her family have every right to be proud of it. There are also some rooms at the resort for those who want to spend a night – or a week. What a great way to relax!
I know this family has more plans for the resort. If I were them I’d be making plans, too. There is even more potential just waiting to be discovered at their resort. However, they can realise that potential along the way while they are open and operating. This place is just too lovely to be hidden away from the public.
My visit to 63 Beach makes me wonder how many more treasures are waiting to be discovered in Guyana. No, I am not making my column into a travel column, but I could not help but share my experience with this paradise get-away. Maybe you need a day in paradise, too…
