After ailing for quite sometime, former National Weightlifter Malcolm ‘Tiger’ Smith finally succumbed to his illness Saturday afternoon last casting the local weightlifting fraternity into mourning. He was 75 years old.
A release from the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAW A) described ‘Tiger,’ as he was fondly called, as a very humble and approachable individual.
He was a national lifter who practiced his trade in the flyweight division and represented Guyana in numerous international tournaments. Subsequent to his active years in the sport, Smith became a qualified referee and officiated at numerous national championships.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Elizabeth, five children and eleven great grandchildren. Friends of the former weightlifter lauded his efforts in the sport even as he was labeled as a consummate family oriented individual.
To this effect, the President and members of the GAWA express deep condolences to the bereaved family and friends. “Tiger would always be remembered for his jovial disposition. He would be sorely missed,” the release stated.
