Dear Editor,
I thought that commercial banks by the nature of their business are supposed to be customer-friendly. However, I got a rude awakening when I visited the one of our local banks last week.
I have been a customer of the bank for about a decade and I have grown accustomed to the professional service they offered.
But my experience last week has forced me to have second thoughts about maintaining my relationship with the bank.
I visited the bank on Tuesday (05-04-11) to open a joint account with my wife and while waiting in the customer service line, a staff who appeared to be a supervisor approached me and enquired about my business there.
I toil him I was there to open an account. When we reached to the counter we were told that we have to make an appointment and were advised as to what documents to walk with.
We agreed to (Thursday 07-04-11) 11:00 hours as the time of the appointment.
On that day I returned to the bank with my wife and since we were a bit early my wife decided to use the time to transact another business within the bank.
We saw the female clerk who we were supposed to keep the appointment with leave her desk.
After completing the other transaction, we proceeded to the new account desk to keep our appointment on time.
But lo and behold, the clerk did not return to her desk until 30 minutes later, after she was called by another clerk who had made the appointment and who had seen us sitting there waiting patiently.
But instead of attending to us, the female clerk proceeded to deal with other customers, although we had met our appointment time.
Now, one would expect that in a professional organisation like a bank appointment time should be honoured. We are employees who had to leave our work to keep the appointment that the bank did not honour.
We were forced to wait for almost an hour while she attended to other customers. Angrily we left without opening that account.
Maybe if we had indicated that we had several million dollars to deposit, the bank would have treated us differently. I am s even tempted to close my existing account.
These people are operating like employees in the public service.
But why did I have to make an appointment to open an account. What would happen if one wants to apply for a loan?
Disappointed Client
