… delegates pay courtesy call on Minister
The programme for the Annual Bartica Easter Regatta has officially been launched. Yesterday, the nine delegates competing for the Miss Regatta title paid a courtesy call on Tourism Minister Manniram Prashad.
On the occasion, Minister Prashad pledged his full support to the entire regatta programme. He said that the Ministry has noted the vast improvement hosting of the event. He lauded the efforts of the regatta committee.
He added that it should be noted that the regatta celebration has moved away from a two-day activity to a weeklong programme. He also noted that the Ministry has sought to have more international flights to facilitate the influx of visitors for the Easter celebration.
The Minister also took the opportunity to announce that for the first year in the history of Regatta that the government has agreed to grant duty free concession to person desirous of brining in racing boats for the event.
Minister Manniram Prashad added that the Regatta has attracted much attention from the international community.
The Ministry will be presenting the first prize of a laptop to the winner of the Miss Bartica pageant.
He further urged Barticians to make the best of the opportunity to market what they have to offer.
Chairman of Bartica Regatta Committee, Mr. Holbert Knights who is also the Regional Chairman stated that this year’s celebration is expected to be one of the biggest thus far.
“I’m not going to say the biggest ever since each year we strive to make it better than the previous year.”
According to Mr. Knights the activities are slated to kick off this weekend with the sashing ceremony for the Miss Regatta Delegates. Also at the event five Barticians who have made significant contribution in the various sectors will be honoured.
The following weekend, on April 16 the ‘Bartica Regatta Jump start’ show will be held, featuring international recording artiste Wayne Marshall and Guyana’s own Jomo. That weekend will also see the staging of the Girl Power show, which will feature bikini models, Big Red and Shelly ‘G’.
For the power boat racing fans this Easter Sunday and Monday will be packed with races as there have been some additions to the racing events.
On Easter Sunday night the Miss Bartica Regatta queen will be crowned. The final event will be on Easter Monday with the grand wash down show featuring the Karma band and a line-up of local acts.
Mr. Knight also noted that the event has been generously sponsored and endorsed by the government. He added that this year’s events have received much support from the business community.
