Six persons are now homeless following a mid-morning blaze that occurred at Ramphal Street, Belvedere Settlement on the Corentyne yesterday.
The breadwinner of the home, Raymond Ramnauth, said he was at work at R&S Shopping Complex in the same village, when he was informed by a neighbour that fire had struck his home. His two daughters and grandchildren were at home at the time.
According to one of the daughters, Hema Ramnauth, whilst doing the dishes in the kitchen downstairs, she noticed one of her neighbours rushing into the yard and creating a stir. Ramnauth said it was then she observed smoke coming from the upper flat of the building. The fire reportedly started from a room at the back of the building.
During this time Ramnauth rushed to take three children, who were in the building, out immediately. In a matter of moments, the entire building became engulfed in flames.
Luckily, Ramnauth, her sister and three children managed to retreat to safety.
Neighbours telephoned the Fire Service and a tender from the New Amsterdam Station turned up, reportedly half-empty.
The tender had to access additional water from a nearby source, but was still not able to save the structure.
“Dem been had little bit water, not plenty, because the house de still on fire when they had to go and get more water”, Ramnauth said. Reports indicate, too, that the Albion Estate fire tender could not have made it to the scene, while many believe that had that tender made it first to the scene, the home might have been saved.
Everything upstairs was destroyed.
“The only thing we could save in our kitchen was our gas cooker and fridge. Everything in the room, the bed, in the blink of an eye, money, everything”, she stated. “The children don’t have any clothes or anything to wear.”
They will be staying with neighbours and friends for the meanwhile until they can put back the pieces of their lives together.
Ramnauth denounced any wiring problems in the upper flat of the home and could not say what she suspected was the cause of the blaze. The home was insured.
