– allegedly struck girl, 10, in face with cane
A teacher from the Golden Grove Primary School has ended up before the police for allegedly striking a ten-year-old pupil in the face with a cane.
Relatives of the Grade five pupil, Obina Hooper, alleged that she was struck in the face and head by her teacher on Monday after she got one of her math problems wrong. However, a family member said that the teacher alleged that some of the children were cheating and she had meant to strike Obina on the back.
A police official confirmed that the female teacher was questioned by police yesterday at the Cove and John Police Station.
However, he was unable to say whether she was detained. Hooper’s relatives said that they also filed a complaint with an official at the Ministry of Human Services and submitted a medical report to the police.
Speaking to Kaieteur News on Monday, Obina Hooper said that ‘Miss’ had given the class a mathematics test that morning.
The child alleged that she got one of her sums wrong and the teacher “lash me (twice) with a whip” on her face and head. According to the pupil, her teacher was angry that she had gotten a sum wrong that the teacher had previously taught the class.
One of Hooper’s relatives said that during a meeting with the teacher and the principal, the teacher alleged that she had inflicted the corporal punishment because some of the children were cheating during the math test.
“She say that they had test and they were cheating and she go to hit her (Obina) in her back and (instead) hit her hear and face.”
The child did not return to school yesterday.
