Following Monday’s tragic incident which claimed the life of 74-year-old Compton Lacon of Mocha/Arcadia, the Mayor and City Council has indicated that it will be moving to clear that location.
In an invited comment, Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green said that they had been looking at the location several weeks prior to Monday’s horrific occurrence with a view to removing the vendors. The Mayor went on to state that the persons vending at the location ever so often contribute to a major traffic build-up as persons are almost always shopping there. He added that they have also received complaints from store owners in proximity about the vending.
Green revealed that the Council has contacted the relevant Government agencies asking for their support.
According to him, the vendors at the location have already been given notice to remove and the actual clearing of the area is expected to commence tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the Mayor said that he will not speculate on the incident but noted that once the police have concluded their investigation the issue of offering assistance to the bereaved family will be looked at by the council. Yesterday when this newspaper revisited the scene, one city council vehicle was parked at the location with what appeared to be dismantled stalls. The area was visibly clearer than the day of the accident.
Reports are that around 14:00 hours on Monday, Compton Lacon was attempting to cross America Street, Newtown, when he was hit and run over by a tractor owned by the Mayor and City Council.
