Police on patrol, acting on information, swooped down on a house located at Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo and unearthed three live matching rounds for a .32 pistol. As a result Erica Rampaul, 23, and Dhira Ramdin, 23, who reside at the said premises were arrested and charged.
They were brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of possession of ammunition without being a licenced ammunition holder.
The two accused were unrepresented. According to police report, Ramdin and Rampaul live together and share an intimate relationship.
After the charge was read to them they both pleaded not guilty. Ramdin added that he is gainfully employed as a farmer while his reputed wife takes care of the home.
Being informed that bail was being refused, Ramdin opted to explain to the Magistrate that a man gave him a car with the ammunition inside to keep.
He went on to explain that Rampaul had no knowledge of the “rounds”. “Meh worship she nah know nothing about the rounds. Is when de police come by we house to search for de man that dem find de ting. Is de same man who give me de rounds and he car to keep.”
Nevertheless, Rampaul with tears in her eyes was led out of the courtroom by police ranks in the company of her reputed husband. The matter will be called again on April 6, at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
