On Sunday evening last, ranks from the Guyana Fire Service saved what could have been a major disaster as fire was set to the Bedford Methodist Church, located at the corners of Camp Street and North Road.
Property Stewart of the church, Cornell Copperfield, said that she received a call from the MMC Security Service informing her that the alarm for the building had gone off.
According to reports, the fire started some time around 22:30 hours. The woman said that she raced down to the site and noticed fire coming from the back of the building.
According to Copperfield, when she arrived at the location the fire service was already there and the blaze was under control. She said that thankfully the fire service managed to keep the blaze to the one part of the building, saving most of it.
Copperfield said that from all indications the fire was the work of an arsonist since from all appearance it was started outside of the building. She claimed that it could not have been electrical in origin. The woman speculated that the fire was set to destroy part of the building so that the perpetrator could steal items out of the building.
“From the looks of things the person wanted to steal the toilet bowls and tank because it’s clear that even during the fire the person/persons tried pulling the toilet out of the building.”
Meanwhile, the Guyana Fire Service came in for high praise by the church members and the congregation. Church members expressed their gratitude saying, had it not been for the quick response the building which has been around for more than 150 years would have been just a memory.
The church leader, Reverend Noelsaint Badette, noted that the little misfortune will not hinder services for the remainder of the week.
When this newspaper visited the church, members were seen cleaning the section of the building which was damaged. The areas mostly affected by the fire include the lavatory area which is located to the back of the building. Some pipe works attached to the building were also damaged.
Up to press time yesterday no one was arrested as both the police and the Guyana Fire Service continue their investigations.
