Conquerors FC, led by a Jomo Hinds double in the 57th and 88th minutes, defeated the Guyana Defence Force and advanced to the semifinals of the Mayor’s Cup football championships when action in that tournament continued at the Georgetown Football Club ground Wednesday evening. Delroy Dean pulled one back for the losers in the 56th minute but in the end, the effort proved to be insignificant.
In the main attraction of the double header, Peter Parks stitched in the lone goal, in the 32nd min, which in the end was sufficient for Camptown to defeat Western Tigers and advance to the next stage.
The ‘Tigers’ failed to emulate the ferocity of the animal they dubbed themselves and for the larger part of the game behaved more like domestic cats. During the initial part of the duel Conquerors displayed the will to retain the true meaning of their name and attacked with venom. They were, however, denied the glory of surging ahead due to shabby play as their strikers approached the opposition’s goal.
Nigel Codrington, manning the right wing, distinguished himself from the bunch when he took possession of the ball around the middle of the field and skillfully weaved his way to the opposition’s goal.
In close proximity to the goal but at a difficult angle, the dapper striker crossed the ball with pin point accuracy on the boot of Parks who collected and thundered home a kick that left Western goalie, Dereck Carter stranded; the ball settling at the back of the net.
Buoyed by his team mate’s success, Rishawn Sandiford seized the ball and raided Western Tiger’s goal. His poorly timed strike simply slid down the right side of the opposition’s goal. Despite spirited efforts by Conquerors to widen the margin, and those of the ‘Tigers’ to equalize, the situation remained unchanged.
The players will rest tonight and tomorrow night but return on Sunday for two scorching semi-finals contests. In the first, Alpha oppose Camptown shortly before Pele battle Conquerors.
The teams are competing for a first prize of one million dollars while the runners up cart off half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive two hundred thousand and one hundred thousand dollars respectively.
