A few hundred students turned up at the Girl Guides Association building yesterday to participate in the Lions Club of D’Urban Park’s annual ‘Career Fair”. This career fair is held annually to offer guidance and to provide information to students in secondary schools.
This year’s Project Co-ordinator for the Lions Club of D’Urban Park, Jocelyn Josiah, told Kaieteur News that one main focus of her organization is education and this event is an initiative of the “Education and Youth Committee”.
The focus is on students who attend schools in the South Georgetown area.
Josiah stated that since the emphasis is on various career choices, the Lions Club of D’Urban Park extended invitations to 84 institutions, to offer guidance and share information about the various positions and careers offered within their organizations or companies, however, the Club only managed to receive 40 responses.
There were the well known companies such as BANKS DIH Limited, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT), Digicel, the Guyana Police Force Traffic Department, Criminal Investigation Department, Customs and Immigration Department, the Media and the Guyana Defence Force.
The five-hour event allowed students to become familiar with the various job opportunities that a variety of companies and offices offered and this event would assist students in determining what type of careers interest them and what procedures would be faced in accessing these careers.
Josiah also said that many students are not fortunate enough to “come out of secondary schools with 10 or 12 Grade One passes” so they would need to know what programmes such and internship are being offered to assist the average students in attaining these jobs.
Abiola Gittens, a teacher at the East Ruimveldt Secondary School, stated that the initiative of the Club is a “very good one” since it focuses on students becoming more responsible and setting the path to their futures on “a right track”.
Gittens said that “lots of times students are indecisive in terms of career paths, some don’t know what they want and some need guidance to make up their minds”.
She added that this type of activity would be more effective and helpful if more schools could be targeted on a regular basis where representatives from various institutions would visit the schools and “hold career talks and speak about career choices”.
The teacher stated, “One of my fellow colleagues was telling me that in her school days if she had known about so many job opportunities she wouldn’t have restricted herself to be a teacher only”.
