Weeks of anxiety that saw consorted efforts to raise funds resulted in Guyana being able to still field a formidable team that will be seeking to retain the team title at the 5th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Powerlifting Championships set for Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, this weekend.
One of the main challenges that have continued to hamper full representation of teams at Regional and International competitions was ever present, but the Executive of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) tried their best to ensure that a powerful unit was able to represent this land.
Leaving Guyana today for the Cayman Islands are Woman’s Open Champion Dawn Barker (Upper Demerara Barbell Club); National Men’s Open Champion (105kg – 110kg) and Overall Best lifter 2010 – Karel Mars (Buddies Gym); National Open Champion (120.0kg – 125.0kg) and the first and only Guyanese to ever squat over 800lbs Colin Chesney (Total Fitness Gym – Grove EBD) and Men’s Masters M1 Champion – ‘Big’ John Edwards (Kingsrow Barbell Club) – who will also perform duties as Manager and Coach.
Winging out tomorrow will be Randolph Morgan of Body Max Gym (82.5kg/83.0kg) the two-time Men’s Open Caribbean Champion (2009/2010) who also copped the Overall Best Lifter accolades at both championships.
Also leaving tomorrow with Morgan will be GAPF President Peter Green, who has been the driving force behind the successful revival of the sport in Guyana.
While the team is not at full strength, Coach Edwards still believes that athletes who will be competing can successfully help Guyana to retain the championship.
“I am confident that we can do Guyana proud again in this regard. We have champions on our side who are all in line to claim gold in their respective categories. We have all been hard at preparing and it is now time for us to prove yet again that we are world beaters.”
This year, 51 lifters from seven (7) member federation countries will take part in the championship. The host nation, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America, Dominican Republic and the United States Virgin Islands will collide.
Based on the nominations submitted ahead of competition, the Guyanese athletes are all rated number one in their categories and barring no unforeseen challenges, are expected to reign supreme yet again.
Green will represent Guyana at the Caribbean Annual General Meeting. The team is expected back next Monday.
