After a tough start at the North/Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying for the World Junior Tennis (WJT) tournament in Santo Domingo, the four member Guyana team put in a much improved performance against their opponents from Aruba and US Virgin Islands on the second day of competition.
Top Under-14 player Daniel Lopes led the way for the Guyana by disposing of Jordan Lawrence, the leading player from the US Virgin Islands 6-3 6-1 in a match lasting just under one hour. Lopes whose game has improved considerably over the last couple of months later teamed up with compatriot Judah Stephney to win 6-4 6-3 against the pair of Luca Del Olmo and Julian Di Persio to give Guyana a 2-0 lead.
Judah Stephney then tried valiantly as he took the first set 6-3 against Luca Del Olmo in his singles match before losing the next two sets in a match lasting nearly 2 hours as the Guyanese boy’s team won the tie 2-1.
The result was a major improvement after they had succumbed to the second ranked Boy’s team from Cuba a day earlier, losing all three matches. The team finished second in their group and will have a playoff with Aruba as Cuba advanced to the next round.
The Girl’s team of Aretta Dey and Nicola Ramdyhan also fared better in their second round match-up with Aruba as Dey pushed her opponent Teddy Van Der Veen in two close sets before succumbing 4-6 3-6 in the singles match. However the Aruban pair of Van Der Veen and Natasha Esschendal then easily won the doubles match 2-0. The next opponent will be team Panama in a playoff.
This is the second time that Guyana is being represented at the WJT and is one of 22 countries around North/Central America and the Caribbean who are participating. The tournament ends tomorrow.
