Edmond DeClou and Kwesi Jones have both signaled an intention to win their respective bouts in convincing fashion when they step into the ring for the 12th edition of the monthly ProAm boxing cards slated for Friday March 25 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
Jones opposes Barbadian based Guyanese Cleveland Fraser for the local light/heavyweight belt while DeClou squares off with Eversley Brown in a 4 rounds middleweight scrap. The former local pugilist is honing his skills at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing gym in Albouystown while the latter operates out of the Young Lions gym in Linden. Yesterday both pugilists heightened their preparations and are spouting confidence of winning their respective bouts.
Top boxing coach George Oprecht is in charge of Brown and Jones and assures that both of his charges are intensely focused for the battle on hand. Yesterday, Jones was placed through a rigid session that included 8 rounds of hectic sparring between Mark Austin and Winston Pompey. The rangy boxer was drilled in the intricacies of attacking while holding a stiff guard and admirably attended to the rigorous work. “He’s coming around nicely but will be required to intensify activities so as to achieve optimum fitness,” intimated Oprecht. The coach further said that he would be placing a lot of emphasis on conditioning works since this is Jones first attempt at a title and also the first time that he has signed for a twelve round bout.
Jones’ manager, Colin Retemiah said that he is confident that his charge would pull through. He said that he is attempting to procure tapes of Fraser but so far his efforts have produced no results. Nevertheless, Mr. Retemiah disclosed that he had attempted to procure any kind of data of Fraser and learnt that he once represented the Guyana Defence Force as an amateur boxer. He further said that he has learnt that Fraser sports a professional record of 8 wins and 3 losses. “My fighter is preparing intensely and would be able to counter anything that Fraser comes with.”
Meanwhile, over in Linden, Edmond DeClou also intensified his preparations at the Young Lions Boxing gym, Wismar under the watchful eyes of Dirk Alexander. The rangy boxer said that he is training twice everyday from as early as 04:00hrs. Yesterday morning he jogged from his home in Wismar to Amelia Ward. “This is a morning ritual for me,” he intimated. DeClou, however, said that he is faced with a problem when it comes to sparring. He said that with just a few boxers in the Mining City, finding adequate partners is proving to be challenging. He said though that he does not visualize immediate problems since he would be coming to Georgetown in search of worthwhile sparring partners.
Asked to make a prediction, DeClou baulked saying that he is not one to get into predicting the outcome of his fights. He did say that he has seen Brown in action against Troy Lewis in an earlier edition of the ProAm cards and was not impressed with what he saw. “He is a slugger so I will be going into the bout to out-box him because come what may, I will be the winner,” stated DeClou.
Kaieteur Sport will continue to monitor the training sessions of all of the boxers as fight night looms.
