On rain ruined 3rd day
By Sean Devers at Providence
In cold murky conditions more associated with England than the tropics of South America, England Lions struggled against impressive Guyana seam bowling during the 39 minutes possible yesterday on the rain ruined third day of the fifth round Regional four-day First Class cricket match at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Resuming on their overnight 42 without loss replying to Guyana’s paltry 78 all out, England Lions lost three wickets as they added 36 runs in the 5.5 overs bowled to reach 68-3 when rain stopped play at 16:24hrs.
England Lions would have been disappointed with their work yesterday in weather conditions which they are accustomed to after Skipper Assad Fudadin (2-6) and Test pacer Brendon Bess (1-31) made early inroads into their batting on a good track after play commenced at 15:45hrs due to persistent rain.
The Guyana seamers produced prodigious swing in the overcast conditions and Adam Lyte soon edged Fudadin to the Keeper Derwin Christian after adding just one to his overnight 17 to leave the visitors, playing in their second West Indies First-Class tournament, on 43-1.
Craig Keiswetter, the most accomplished of the England ‘A’ batsmen, began the day on 21 but did not add to his 2nd day score as Bess, whose solitary Test was against South Africa in Barbados last year, produced an absolute beauty to remove the South African born right-hander at 47-2.
The ball pitched around off stump, left the batsman at pace and found the edge for Christian to hold his second catch as the Guyanese, who were dismissed for their 7th lowest First-Class total on Saturday, fought back.
Ben Stokes was then comprehensively bowled by Fudadin for one as England Lions, desperately trying to get first innings points with more rain approaching, slipped to 53-3.
Jonathon Bairstow (14) and Andrew Gale (6) survived to the close as rain had the final say on the penultimate day. Play is scheduled to start at 09:30hrs today.
