– Carto dominates sprint events
Current national ‘Junior Sportsman of the Year’, Chavez Ageday held off emerging sprinter, Stephan James to win a scorching 200m yesterday in the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) National Youth and Junior Championships in rainy conditions.
The athletes reminded enthusiasts of their colossal battle at the National Schools’ Championships last year when Ageday out-leaned James to win a controversial 200m. Though, his win yesterday on a heavy Police Sports Club Ground was more convincing, Ageday was pushed to his limit and eventually won in 22.3 seconds with James turning in 22.6 seconds. Linden’s Carlon Pitt came in third in 23.2 seconds in easily the best race of the meet.
Marlon Moshette won the youth version in 23.2 seconds while Keon Lynch was second in 23.5 seconds. Sean Budha was third in 24.4 seconds. Moshette surrendered the 400m to Samuel Doris who won the race in 53.4 seconds. Quincy Simpson (53.8) was second while Moshett (54.6) was third.
James continued his impressive rise when he blistered the heavy track to win the junior 400m in 50.95 seconds with Linden’s Carlon Pitt finishing second in 53.0 seconds and Bevan Noble third in 53.77 seconds.
Before the 200m events, Ageday had ran 11.1 seconds to win the 100m ahead of Keifa Henry and National Schools’ champion, Winston Caesar respectively. Henry ran 11.4 while Caesar had 11.7 seconds as Ageday initiated dual win in the sprint events. Keon Lynch won the U-18 or the youth 100m in 11.3 seconds, beating Curtis Fraser (11.6) and Akeem Aaron (12.1) in the second and third positions respectively.
Tiffany Carto dominated the sprint events in the youth category with wins in the 100m, 200m and second in the 400m events. Carto ran 12.8 seconds to beat Renetta Evelyn (13.1) and Aletha Moore (13.4) in a decent 100m race. Carto then turned in 26.7 seconds to win the 200m ahead of Evelyn (27.6) and Moore (28.0) respectively.
Interestingly, the national sprint then went for the three-peat when she opted to compete in the 400m. However, Melissa Byass was too strong for Carto. Byass won in 1:00 while Carto finished second in 1:02. Evelyn (1:09) was third.
Double CARIFTA gold medallist, Jevina Straker won the 1500m race in 5:16.68 while Adana Roberts was second in 5:57.0. Region Nine’s Beatrice David was third in 6:01.54. Malcolm Walcott won the male race in 4:35.75 while Trevon Grant (4:37.08) was second. Junior Stephens from the Rupununi was third in 4:48.94 to highlight the top races yesterday.
