The Office of the President appears to be stockpiling ammunitions as is evidenced in a recent request by its Permanent Secretary Nanda Gopaul to the Chairman of the National Procurement and Tender Administration, Donald De Clou, for selective tendering.
The ammunition is to complement the stock already in place at the Office of the President for the Presidential Guards.
According to Dr Gopaul, “The Head of the Presidential Guard has recommended that these items be acquired from Hackeem Mohamed, licensed firearms and ammunition dealers, who has submitted the most competitive bid in the sum of $11,600,000 to supply these ammunitions.”
Gopaul informed De Clou that “this matter is therefore referred for the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board’s consideration for selective tendering to be done and for approval of awards to Hakeem Mohamed in the sum of ($11,600,000).”
Quotations for the supply of the ammunition were received from Hackeem Mohamed, Magtech and Bonanza International Inc.
Office of President is looking to acquire 50,000 nine MM rounds, 40,000 rounds of .38 ammunition and 20, 000 rounds of 7.62 x 39 bullets.
Presidential Guards fall under the Guyana Police Force and some $209M has been budgeted for the purchase of ammunition for 2011.
