President of the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club Raj Boodhoo speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday expressed confidence that the repaving work currently being done at the South Dakota Circuit will be completed in time to stage the season opening Endurance Meet scheduled for March 21.
Boodhoo said that the work which is being done by Dipcon Engineering Services Ltd was initiated through the munificence of President Bharrat Jagdeo, who signalled his Government’s commitment of $40million to the club to completely resurface the track during the presentation ceremony that followed the final leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship that was staged here last November.
Asked whether the newly resurfaced track will now perk up the all-round performance of motor racing in Guyana, Boodhoo responded in the affirmative, stating that it will now improve the times of competitors, while the previously abrasive nature of the surface will no longer be so, thereby making it a little less expensive on competitors budget to acquire large amount of tyres that would suffer severe wear and tear on the old surface.
He added that more and more competitors from overseas will now want to come, knowing that the amount of sponsorship that was required in the past to equip and fully maintain their machines will be less, while the whole nature of competition will significantly improve.
According to the President, early signs already seem to suggest that the first Meet of Circuit Racing will enjoy a much larger contingent from overseas than seen in previous years and that is indicative of the competitors’ eagerness to test out the newly re-laid track and improve their lap times.
He disclosed that the executive are meeting on a consistent basis to map out strategies that will certainly further increase the popularity of the sport locally.
“This year we would like to make motor racing the undisputed king of sports in Guyana, if we’re not already that,” Boodhoo told this newspaper.
He extended thanks once again to President Jagdeo and the Government for their timely intervention and promised that the club has resolved to make this year one of the best seen in the sport for sometime.
