First day washed out at Providence
By Sean Devers
Torrential overnight rain which continued for most of yesterday washed out the opening day of Guyana’s fifth round Regional four-day First Class cricket match at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday without a ball being bowled.
Umpires Clyde Duncan, Luther Kelly and Standby Shannon Crawford called off the day’s play just after 16:00hrs although the rain had decreased to a drizzle by 15:10hrs, Tea time.
Even if the rain, which once again became a heavy downpour around 17:00hrs, had stopped, the fading light caused by very overcast conditions and the time needed for mopping up operations would have prevented sufficient time for a start yesterday.
While Providence is arguably the fastest drying ground in the Region, the outfield, for the first time in its five-year-history was under water during the opening session of the match and the covers were never taken off.
The water quickly disappeared once the rain was reduced to a drizzle but the Umpires believes that if there is more rain this morning the scheduled 09:30hrs start could be in jeopardy since the outfield will be too wet even if it is not waterlogged.
Play is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs and end at 17:30hrs on each remaining day of the contest to make up for the time lost yesterday since no more than 98 overs can be scheduled on any one day. Guyana Captain Assad Fudadin was hoping for action and at least first innings points in this game against a side which has consistently produced the best batting performances in this competition. “England have batted well but we have the ability with the bat to make big scores although we have not managed to put together big totals in our games so far and we know that we need some points here if we are to stay in contention for the semi-finals,” Fudadin said.
The West Indies ‘A’ team left-hander said that Guyana (13 Points with two matches to go) can still reach the semi-finals if they get an outright win in one of their last two matches along with at least first innings points in the other.
“We are behind Jamaica, Trinidad (and Tobago), England Lions, CCC and the Windwards but with the English going back home after the preliminary rounds, the fifth placed team in the competition will advance to the semis if England finish among the top four,” Fudadin said.
When these teams last played at this level, Guyana won by seven wickets at Bourda in the 2001 Busta Cup semi-final with Ramnaresh Sarwan getting a century and Carl Hooper 91 and Reon King (the match Referee for this game) and Hooper taking five-wicket hauls.
Guyana lost to Jamaica and the Windward’s while their last game against Barbados ended in draw at Providence. This is the fifth consecutive day of First-Class cricket washed out in Guyana this season after all four days of Guyana’s second round game against the Leewards Islands were rained out at Bourda. The forecast is for more rain today.
