Hosts, Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG) took the top spot at a recent Inter Gym competition for Berbice gyms that was held at the New Amsterdam Town Hall to coincide with their 5th Anniversary.
It was fistic fury and non-stop action as Berbicians witnessed a night of exciting bouts. The other gyms competing were Central Boxing Gym (CBG) located at the Central Police Station, New Amsterdam and the recently formed Tiger Head Boxing Gym (THBG), Sandvort West Canje, coached by former National Light Weight Champion Al Thomas.
A total of 11 bouts were contested apart from an exhibition scrap between two Under-10 fighters from the host gym.
Fight night results shows Dangai Lagan (PRBG) winning a split decision over Akeem Hector (CNBG); Bowtam ‘The Canje Bad Man’ Seeraj (PRBG) knocked out Nigel Hector (CNBG); Julian Blair (PRBG) won a unanimous verdict from Sean Bacchus (CNBG); Kevin Mc Kenzie (PRBG) k’oed Courtly Rose (CNBG); Keon Williams (PRBG) dispatched Julian Rolheir (CNBG); Joel Williamson (PRBG) won unanimously over Rodwell Mc Andrew (CNBG).
In the fight of the night Michael April fighting out of the Tiger Head Boxing Gym upset favourite Jamal Eastman of PRBG, gaining a split (2-1) decision over his opponent in a bruising encounter.
Both boxers went after each other from the opening bell and never eased up until the final bell. Travis Fraser then made it two wins for the pugilists from THBG when he won by a similar 2-1 margin over Kishawn Simon of PRBG.
Richard Williamson (PRBG) pulled things back on course for the host gym with an easy win over Andrew Sukram of CBG.
The experienced Kelsey George (PRBG) then had to pull on all his experience to get the better of Edison Haywood (THBG) via points. Kelon Hector and Dangai Logan both of the CBG showcased their skills in a few of the exhibition bouts.
When the final bell was sounded, PRBG emerged as the best gym racking up a total of eight wins followed by THBG with CNBG occupying the cellular position.
The night’s events were conducted under the rules of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA).
The host club is extending thanks to the GABA for its assistance in making the activity a success, especially Vice President and former amateur and national boxing champion Jeff Roberts who also has responsibility for the ancient County. The activity was coordinated Roberts and Orlando Rogers.
Apart from making this competition an annual affair, the club is hoping to hold tournaments at least four times per year and is encouraging other gyms in Berbice to do likewise. Their next activity is slated for the New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School later this month.
Gratitude is also being extended to the following sponsors; Mr. Errol Alphonso (Club Patron), A. Ally and Sons, The Candy Shop and Bar – Pitt Street New Amsterdam, DDL, La Caribe Diner, Ansa Mc al Trading, Attorney-at-law Mursaline Bacchus and Gordon’s Boutique and Stationery Supplies.
