Scores of residents complained of being marooned yesterday in Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, as a road repair company blocked Harmony Road, a key street, leading to the community.
Other streets were rendered impassable by heavy rains and there were reports of vehicles being stuck on the roadway and other in drains.
Kares Engineering, a construction company, according to residents, had been repairing a main road which initially developed potholes a few months after being completed last November.
“They place dem big equipment blocking off the culverts leading to me street. We don’t have a problem with this. But de streets we using full of water and we vehicles sinking.” The Kaieteur News vehicle, attempting to maneuver around of the equipment, went into a ditch and had to be extricated.
According to another resident, a Public Works official has asked Kares to prepare one street for access to the area but no work has started.
Kaieteur News called Kares office and was told to call the Ministry of Housing.
One piece of heavy equipment used to block the roads could not move because thieves, over the past nights, removed key parts. A mechanic was seen attempting to assess the damage. Calls to the Housing Ministry were not immediately returned and the workers could not say when the equipment would be removed.
“The road gotta dry first. The rains affecting the drying,” one worker said.
While equipment blocked one entrance, the other end was blocked by several piles of sand and stone.
Several students stayed home because of the deplorable condition, Kaieteur News was told.
“I can understand the repairs that have to be done. But we are not told and then they do it without allowing us to have an option. This is disrespect from both the government and the contractor,” said Troy, another resident whose Canter truck suffered a puncture while stuck in a hole.
Government recently said that it had withheld monies from Kares Engineering for the road construction in Westminster, the section leading to Parfait Harmonie. Contracts to the tune of $131M was awarded to that company last year.
Kares now has to repair a number of roads in the area, including the one that is blocked.
