– fail to produce amicable results
Several attempts by the executive of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) to elect office bearers for the fiscal year fizzed out with several important positions remaining unfilled after several of the nominees signaled a disinterest in serving in those capacities.
The executive had earlier dispatched a circular that summoned all affiliates to a meeting, prior to the Annual General Meeting, to discuss grouses and concerns towards the betterment of the Association. That meeting had to be aborted after the affiliates failed to attend the function. The AGM was them planned one week later but despite the improved attendance, no one seemed to be interested in several major positions.
A source close to the GASP revealed that further attempts to stage the meeting last Sunday received lukewarm support and to date only a few positions have been taken up, with several remaining unfilled. The source said that the incumbent President Moen Gafoor has said that he will not seek re-election and no other member is interested in the position.
Three other positions remain unfilled including the Vice President, Secretary and the Treasurer. The only positions that have attracted interest are the Public Relations Officer, occupied by Yvonne Murray, the Organizing Secretary (Orlando Michael) and those of the three committee members.
Kaieteur Sport sought a comment from one of the executives who requested anonymity. He said that early dissenting remarks have caused the GASP to dispatch a circular inviting the membership to a meeting to entertain any complaints and/or dissatisfaction they may have had.
A part of the circular read, “In an attempt to do address certain concerns of players within GASP I have held discussions with most of the major stake holders and highly rated players to address this decline. As part of the many discussions entertained, there were revelations varying from personal reasons, to attitude problems stemming from individuals which included lack of prompt start to competitions, confining competitions
to those that were scheduled and the dates, accountability issues both financially and from an AGM perspective, leadership issues and lack of recognition of stalwarts of the game. There have also been accusations of persons promoting their self interest at the expense of the association.
Whilst there are/were merit to some of these comments, I thought it fit to ask the GASP executive to summon a special meeting in order to chart the way forward and provide an opportunity for aggrieved members to have a hearing while fully ventilating these issues.”
The above correspondence failed to produce the required results and the executive decided to proceed with the AGM. The first attempt was aborted for the want of a quorum while the second produced the unfavourable results.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the few elected members were asked to meet on Thursday and review the constitution to ascertain if any of its statutes can ameliorate the situation. That committee will report to the former executive at the end of the process. In the meantime, all activities pertaining to tournaments are temporarily suspended.
