Following the historical launch of the Carib Flood Light Twenty20 knock-out cricket competition at the Bartica Community Centre Ground on Saturday evening, fans were treated to some pulsating on field action.
Bartica ‘A’ team sponsored by Hopkinson Mining recorded a nerve racking one wicket win over East Bank Essequibo (EBE) to advance to the semifinals, while North Essequibo, in the tournament’s opening salvo, hammered Pomeroon by 7-wickets to also book their semifinal berth.
After winning the toss on a cool evening with a colourful crowd on hand, by far the biggest crowd to watch a cricket match in Bartica; Bartica ‘A’ led by Robin Narine decided to invite EBE led by National cricketer Trevor Benn to take first strike.
The East Bank Essequibo side were not allowed to score freely as the opening quickies for Bartica (Kevin Fredericks and Garfield Morris) found good line and length with some fiery pace to back up which kept the opposing batsmen in check.
They eventually posted a challenging 136-9 off their 20-overs with the top score of 40 (4×4 2×6) coming off the bat of Jason Heyliger, extras backing up with 21 and Lennox Andrews 16 (2×4).
Garfield Morris was the pick of the bowlers for the home team with figures of 3-25 from 4-overs, Kevin Fredericks snared 2-15 and Robert Moore collected 2-22.
Needing to score 137 to win Bartica were at one point coasting along with their Captain leading from the front but almost self destruct as their batsmen panicked at the death. Bartica were coasting along at 94-3 in the 12th over but rash shot selections almost resulted in them losing.
It took some composed batting at the death by Sherwin Murray (11no) to guide the home team to victory; responding with 141-9, Morris was at the other end on 00.
Captain Narine’s robust innings of 37 which was spiced up with 4 fours and 3 maximums set the foundation for the memorable win; Arjune Jagroo (25), Mahase Richards (17), Kenzo Baksh (14) all contributed.
Richards, who is regarded as one of the biggest hitters of the ball in Bartica, smashed Benn for the biggest six of the day way into the Anglican Church yard but Benn responded next ball to have Richards caught at the wicket in a pulsating match up that went down to the final over. EBE however have only themselves to blame having put down catches at critical points during the game.
The opening game saw North Essequibo (NE) signaling their intentions that they are a serious contender for the top prize of $400,000 compliments of Carib when they brushed aside Pomeroon by 7-wickets.
Pomeroon won the toss and elected o take first strike but on account of some disciplined bowling by the NE bowlers Pomeroon were restricted to 122-9 when their overs ran out; Anthony Persaud was the top scorer with 31 (3×4 1×6).
Leading the bowling was Uvindra Balgobin with 2-13, Mark Tyrell 2-34 with one each for Grayson Paul, Nelson Gordon, Vishwanauth Lall and Keron Sewnarine.
NE made light work of the total blasting their way to 126-3 off 16.2 overs to wrap up the game by 7-wickets.
Leading the run chase with a robust innings was Faizul Karim who fell 4-runs short of what would have been a deserving half century as he hit the boundary ropes four times while clearing it twice. He found able support from Suraj Sukdeo who stroked 32 (2×4 3×6), Navin Bahadur 30 (4×4 1×6) and Rajiv Manikchand 10no (1×4 1×6).
Like EBE, Pomeroon did not help their cause as they too squandered numerous catches.
The final two quarterfinal matches were slated for yesterday, South and Central Essequibo were down to collide in the first game followed by Bartica ‘B’ against Wakenaam/Leguan Combine.
The semifinals will be played on Friday with the third place and final set for Saturday.
