The University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) recently launched its on-campus Students Society that would seek to deliver services directly to students in Berbice.
Since its establishment in Berbice a decade ago, UGBC has never had office space that was dedicated for student issues and matters.
Recently, the building was handed over by Director of UGBC, Professor Daizal Samad, to representative of UGBC on the University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS), Karl Vanier.
Students can now raise issues such as matters relating to life on the campus, problems with lecturers, problems with registration and other general student problems which need to be addressed.
“We’re open to ideas and we encourage students to come in and share ideas. We want to enhance your lives [on campus] socially. Coming to university is not just getting a good Grade Point Average (GPA)”, Vanier said.
The campus that is home to some 520 students celebrated its 10th anniversary last November.
And according to Vanier, office space for the UGBC Student society was acquired in January. Students selected to assist with keeping the office in operation are Lauristian Choy, Samantha Fraser- Ashram, Arianne Eversley and Ebony Narpaty.
Vanier noted that many students of the university view the student society negatively and hopes to change this perception.
One other service the UGBC society will be performing, Vanier said, is assisting students with calculation of their GPAs.
“We have found out that many students cannot calculate their GPA. We will try to have that here”, he said.
He also noted that many students register for new academic year and continue studying at the institution, only to find out late that their GPA turns out to be insufficient for them to continue onto the Bachelor’s programmes. He said that if students know their GPAs in advance, this can be avoided. He asked students on campus to get in touch with the UGBC Student Society to know their GPAs.
The representative also said that UGBC needs a counselor on campus to deal with students’ personal problems. He noted that the main campus in Turkeyen has a counselor and a medical facility for such purposes.
“We pay the same fees as Turkeyen students. I think that it [a counselor] is a very critical position,” he said.
He believes the two campuses need to work hand-in-hand and should not have total autonomy from each other. He also said that Turkeyen needs to become a little more aware of what is going on at UGBC. (Leon Suseran)
