History was created yesterday at the Bartica Community Centre Ground when the first ever flood light cricket competition to be played in the community, bowled off.
The Carib Twenty20 knock-out tournament featuring eight (8) teams from the Essequibo Region commenced just before 17:00hrs following a brief opening ceremony with Pomeroon taking on North Essequibo. The main attraction brought together Bartica ‘A’ and East Bank Essequibo.
Two more matches are fixed for today at the same venue, South Essequibo oppose Central Essequibo from 13:00hrs with the final quarterfinal match featuring Bartica ‘B’ and Wakenaam/Leguan Combined.
Minister within the Public Service Ministry Dr. Jennifer Westford delivered the feature opening remarks after which she faced the first ball bowled by Co-Director (Deon Ferrier) of Promotional Group D&C Promotions, the other Director being Charles Jones.
Minister Westford congratulated the organisers for taking the bold step in bringing such a tournament which not only features players from Bartica, but from the entire Essequibo Region.
The players were challenged to play the game with vigor and pride. “I urge you all to play hard and play collectively. I want to also urge other persons to come forward and support this activity. As you know sports is very, very important especially for our youths; it keeps them away from problems.
I would like to congratulate those sponsors who have made a contribution to the competition and I would also like to congratulate the organisers for bringing off this competition, may the best team win.”
Apart from the many individual prizes on offer, Minister Westford informed that she would be sponsoring a trophy for the best player of the tournament which might not necessarily come form the winning team.
The respective winners from this weekend’s four matches will advance to the semifinals fixed for next Saturday with the third place game and final to be contested on Sunday.
The winning team will cart off the top prize of $400,000 with the losing finalist pocketing $200,000. One hundred thousand dollars is set aside for the winner of the third place encounter with $50,000 going to the team placing fourth compliments of the Bartica Police Station.
The man-of-the-match for each quarterfinal game will receive US$50 while for the semifinals and final that incentive will be doubled.
The organisers have expressed thanks to all the sponsors who have contributed towards making the tournament a reality.
