Eborn Ennis, 27, of Sophia was stabbed in the chest and succumbed after a failed attempt to rob Tony Yong, in the vicinity of Demico House Sophia bus park yesterday.
Ennis was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead, while Young was taken into police custody. A police source later said that Yong’s detention was merely to facilitate investigation and that he was likely to be released later in the day.
According to reports, around 5:30 am yesterday Ennis, called “Mango Man” and an accomplice tried to rob Tony Yong, an employee at Vieira fisheries, of his cell phone. Ennis who was armed with a knife snatched the cell phone from Yong but received the surprise of his life after Young pulled a larger knife and stabbed the assailant in his chest.
According to vendors, two men “confronted a Chinese man” in the vicinity of the Sophia Bus Park. “One of the men who was armed with a knife proceeded to rob the Chinese man of his cell phone. However, the Chinese man pulled out a larger knife than his assailant and stabbed him in the region of his chest.
“Every morning, early in front of Demico, there is always a set of thieves lurking around the place. There needs to be a plain clothes policeman at the market in the morning to catch some of these young bandits that attack people at the market.”
One of the eyewitnesses refused to say anything about the ordeal, since she said that she was threatened by a colleague of the phone snatcher, and that she was only working with the police. “They say that they gon kill me if I say anything.”
“These police at the Stabroek Market outpost are all lazy and corrupt. When they catch a chain snatcher the man does give them a raise pun the chain or whatever he snatch and the police does loose them. Just the other day a man get rob here and when you go to give a statement the police sending you to Brickdam, when you reach Brickdam they asking you why the outpost didn’t take the statement? They just helping the little thieves,” one woman lamented.
Attempts to contact relatives of Ennis failed.
