Leon Gobin 17, and Vanouza Hackett 19, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, to answer to the charge of simple larceny.
They were both represented by attorney at law Gregory Gaskin.
They both pleaded not guilty.
According to police prosecutor, Inspector Stephen Telford on February 26, at Kwakwani waterfront the two accused pilfered a million-dollar fiberglass boat and an outboard engine worth $500,000, property of the People National Congress Reform (PNC-R).
Gaskin in his bail application told the court the Gobin is gainfully employed as a logger. The lawyer explained that on the day of the incident his two clients were in Linden. With that he made an oral submission for his clients to be admitted to reasonable bail, citing the fact that the two accused have a strong alibi.
Bail was then granted in the sum of $100,000 each but Gaskin sought reduced bail. He asked for $50,000 bail for each accused but the prosecution objected and requested that the suspects be released on $75,000 bail each. Magistrate Beharry came down on the side of the prosecution.
The matter will be called again on March 18, next.
The police earlier this week captured four men and recovered a boat and 48-horsepower engine owned by the People’s National Congress/Reform less than 48 hrs after they were stolen.
The boat and engine were stolen from the PNCR Kwakwani location in the Berbice River.
The fiberglass boat and engine were used by the party to conduct its business in the riverain areas.
