Ashish Sharma, a tenant who has been renting an apartment complex at Cummings Lodge, is now faced with a situation that has left him disturbed and annoyed at the same time. The apartment is part of the Gaffoor Complex.
Sharma, an Indian national, said that he has been renting the same apartment for almost two year. But to his dismay, when he awoke on Thursday morning he realized that his first impression was by far incorrect. He discovered his kitchen window open and a number of items missing from his apartment.
He said that the robbery occurred some time between midnight and 05:00 hrs (05:00 am) while he, his wife and son were sound asleep in their bedroom.
Sharma said that when he awoke early yesterday morning and ventured out of his room, he became aware that his apartment had been ransacked. He also noticed that things were not how he had left them the previous night.
His laptop (which was in his laptop bag), an undisclosed amount of $US and $SRD (Suriname Dollars), his Bank of America card, household items and his footwear were missing as well as his office documents.
Kaieteur News understands that the area is physically secured with high concrete fences and grilled gates that are operated by security ranks from the Professional Guard Services.
On Thursday at the Gafoor Complex the guard said that, “Nobody is allowed inside according to orders”.
Sharma complained that he, like other tenants, all expect that they are protected. He blames it on the security guards, who he said, are found sleeping on the premises when in reality they are supposed to be awake, guarding the tenants.
It was also reported that the United States Charge resides in one of the apartments and that the back entrance was “given to the US people”. The building also has Brazilian nationals, Surinamese officials and persons associated with CARICOM.
Sharma added that the tenants have repeatedly complained that the guard service keeps sending new ranks, and that they will not be aware of who they should allow into the compound as well as who live in the apartments.
He said, “Other tenants will support my voice in this because it can affect us all”. The man explained that all of the tenants should be able to sleep comfortably, without having to worry that when they awake, valuable items would be missing from their apartments.
A report was made at the Sparendaam Police Station and police ranks took the necessary information and are currently conducting investigations into this matter.
