Dear Editor,
Reference is made to an article in (Kaieteur News, 28/01/11) which it was stated that Mr. Bouterse made an impromptu visit to Guyana to meet with his friend Mr. Jagdeo and had dinner with him at a Chinese Restaurant and to enquire why the President is not using his friendship with the Suriname President to resolve all outstanding border issues.
Suriname is claiming the Corentyne River as their own up to the mark at low tide, contrary to international law, which stipulates the centre line of the river.
This settlement would enable the Government if they choose to develop the Upper Canje Area for Ethanol production to build wharf facilities and a pump station to pump water from the Corentyne directly for irrigation purposes.
This would be cheaper and superior to building a reservoir and an outlet sluice in the upper reaches of the Canje to irrigate.
However, development of this area is dependent of the state of the mouth of the Canje Creek in a few years time, which could become silted up on account of the Canje Floating Bridge being built so close to its mouth.
If this happens and I think it will, it will be the end of any development for the Berbice Region. Salt-water intrusion up the Canje is also another cause for alarm.
Talk of using the Berbice River, as a source of wharfage facility and an outlet for Brazil manufactured goods is nothing more than a pipe dream.
Mr. Jagdeo should also resolve the boundary for the New River Triangle Area that is also in contention.
In a few months time Mr. Jagdeo will be leaving politics and if successful with his negotiations will leave an indelibly legacy notwithstanding the fact he would be leaving the nation with a tattered economy, shattered infrastructure and the people more divided than ever since he assumed office some 11 years ago.
M. Alli
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
