Ansa Mcal/Stag Beer yesterday rewarded the champion team and top performers of the just concluded 7-a-side Inter Ward street football tournament which was held in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.
Featuring some 30-teams from the various communities in Linden, taking the championship trophy in this inaugural competition was Team 25 of the Central Mackenzie Area who defeated Silver City’s ‘Silver Bullets’ 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out in the finals following a nil all stalemate at the end of regulation and extra time.
Team 25’s captain Ruel Williams collected the tournament’s first prize of $200,000 from Ansa Mcal’s Marketing Assistant John Maikoo while Leon Clement received the runner’s up prize of $100,000 on behalf of Silver Bullets.
Amelia’s Ward Rough and Rugged received $50,000 for placing third.
They took care of Hard Knocks of Blueberry Hill/Christianburg 2-1 also in extra time on penalty kicks; their captain Mickail Rigby collected the cheque on behalf of the team.
The event was well supported by the fans at every game and the organisers, 20/20 Sports Bar and Young Achievers are expressing their profound gratitude to the fans for their excellent support.
Meanwhile, Maikoo lauded the event, calling it a major success and that his company, Ansa Mcal stands committed to making it an annual affair given the great support shown in its inaugural staging.
Anthony White, member of the organising group, thanked the teams who participated in this year’s event for being punctual and producing top class performances in every game played.
White promised to make next year’s event even bigger while expressing thanks to MAikoo and Ansa Mcal Trading as well as the other sponsors from Linden who really supported the event that left a positive mark on ‘street football’ in the Mining Town.
