The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs yesterday secured bail for 21-year-old Rocky Charles, who is accused of chopping off three of his father’s fingers.
Charles 21, of Acquero Village, North West District, was released on $40,000 bail on the charge of felonious wounding. He is accused of wounding his father, Collingsworth Charles, during an argument.
According to the prosecutor, Corporal Venetta Pindar, the accused and his father were involved in an argument which escalated into a fight. The father became angry and struck the accused about his body with a piece of wood. The prosecutor added that Charles then took a cutlass and chopped his father’s hand, resulting in the man losing three of his fingers.
The wounded man was admitted to hospital while the accused was arrested and charged.
Charles pleaded not guilty to the charge.
His attorney, Gino Persaud said that his client is gainfully employed as a miner and has never been involved in any criminal matter before. Persaud requested that his client be granted his pre-trial liberty in a reasonable sum. He cited the fact that the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs would be securing bail and was ready to take the responsibility of ensuring that Charles report for his trial.
Welfare Officer Juliet Kissoon, from the said Ministry was present during the hearing.
Pindar made no objection but requested that bail be substantial so as to ensure the accused return for his case.
After listening to the facts of the case, the Magistrate allowed Charles bail in the sum of $40,000.
The matter will be called again on April 5, at the Acquero Magistrate’s Court.
