The pace is definitely on the up in the cycling arena and Sunday’s 55-mile road-race in the Ancient County of Berbice, the first of three to celebrate the life of the late President Cheddi Jagan is expected to be a hot contest.
With an ultra fit Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay expected back from the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago where he has been doing well for team Trek fans can look forward to a competitive race.
This will be the 14th edition of the race which will pedal off from Freedom House, New Amsterdam at 09:00hrs proceed to No. 55 Village on the Corentyne before returning to Port Mourant for what is anticipated to be another exhilarating finish.
Last year’s finish saw Greaves out powering Geron Williams, Robin Persaud and Albert Philander in a four way sprint to the line in a time of 2 hours 29 minutes 20 seconds.
With Persaud showing excellent form early this season along with the likes of Walter Grant-Stuart, Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton, Alex Mendes and juniors Paul de Nobrega, Kurt La Rose and new kid on the block Raynauth Jeffrey a keen dual is anticipated.
Leading the charge for the ancient County will be Neil Reece.
Veteran riders along with the upright and females will turn back at Hogstyle to finish at Port Mourant.
Junior Niles who is also getting into ominous form won last year’s veteran division and will start as favourite but will be pushed all the way by Newton and Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson among others.
The female segment of the race is expected to be one of the best in recent times with National champion Hazina Barrett taking on the challenge of Naiomi Singh and home girl Marica Dick. Upright winner last year was Marlon King while the Over-60 winner was Walter Issacs.
Prizes will be awarded to the first 6 finishers overall while the first 3 juniors, veterans and upright cyclists will also be rewarded. Eight prime prizes will also be up for grabs.
Special prizes will be awarded to the first 2 females, first veteran over-60 and the oldest competitor to cross the line; 75-year-old Edward Williams took this accolade last year.
Cyclists are asked to take note that transportation to Berbice on Sunday will leave the National Sports Commission’s Office, 91 Middle Street at 05:00hrs.
